I have absolutely no sources to back this up, but I'm choosing to believe that Fermilab's herd started with a message about bosons that was read by someone too awkward to ask if there might be a typo before getting in over their head.
What a spot of joy! Fermilab's first baby bison of 2021 arrived this morning! Welcome, little friend! #NationalMammal news.fnal.gov/2021/04/fermil鈥

"This dinosaur is back in the top 20 after more than 10 years. Fortran was the first commercial programming language ever, and is gaining popularity thanks to the massive need for (scientific) number crunching. Welcome back Fortran," says Tiobe. zdnet.com/article/this-old-p鈥

I was prepared to be annoyed, but this is actually pretty good. Bottom Line: we use Fortran because it is very good at doing what we need to run massive climate models.
With great, "new" programming languages like #Python, @ChapelLanguage, and @JuliaLanguage - Why are the #Climate models that help us confront generational challenges like climate change written in a language from 1950?? 馃憞 partee.io/2021/02/21/climate鈥

I got two of these to thank @pinboard for everything he did in the 2016 and 2020 election efforts. So, thank you, and this 10+ pound monstrosity (roughly keyboard sized) will be on its way to you soon.
