Do you know what Hypernormalization is and why it is likely what a lot of us are experiencing at the moment? It’s largely a term used when people in larger society are aware that the system they live in isn’t working but are pressured to just continue to function like normal.

This is true for many things we are experiencing right now: Covid times, where everyone wants us to go back to normal without changing anything to keep us safe and to protect us, asking us to work and live normally despite us knowing that this isn’t working.

It’s true for our end stage capitalism, exposed by the pandemic, knowing that this system is killing us, it’s not working like it used to for our parents, and yet we are pressured to have jobs and a family and buy a house even though none of it works like that anymore.

It’s true for climate change and how we are hyper aware that what we are doing as a society is leading us into climate collapse and yet we are told that nothing can be done, that we should just continue on like normal, that nothing should change.

Conservatives are absolute MASTERS of hypernormalization and applying pressure to ensure the status quo is maintained, regardless of whether that makes sense or not, or if it’s working for people or not. It’s all “natural hierarchy” and no inspiration for what COULD be done.

Our lives these days are full of hypernormalization of endless systems that do not work for us and endanger our lives, that make us sick, that kill us, that make us unhappy and unfulfilled - and with no plan or offers for alternatives.

How many people do you know that dream of changing their lives, live in a commune in the woods, buy a farm and escape - somehow - the systems that are not working for them? Because I know endless amounts of people who have that fantasy and we don’t offer them anything.

Hypernormalization includes both the pressure of society to just continue on and pretend nothing is wrong as well as us having no means or true idea how to exist differently because of how dependent our lives are on the systems we exist within. It’s traumatic.

The first time the term was coined was during the collapse of the Soviet Union and how people experienced the years leading up to its collapse. End stage capitalism is in a similar situation. We know it isn’t working. But it’s unclear what’s going to happen to us and society.

I don’t know if this is soothing or terrifying. But sometimes it helps me put words to how I’m feeling and why our lives feel on hold, in flux, why it feels impossible to plan for the future, why it feels so wrong to just... continue on. You’re not crazy. It makes sense.

What you’re feeling is completely justified. You’re not alone. Millions of people feel like this. I don’t know what will happen and the uncertainty is really difficult to deal with, but at least I can tell you that you’re not alone with your feelings. ❤️ Love you all.

On the topic of not knowing how to exist differently..my friend sent me this video and I thought it was insightful. There is a different way to exist outside of capitalism, and each of us as individuals can find our own way. piped.kavin.rocks/-1ZK2-viyAo
