Let us invent then a new breed of AI systems that mix an awareness of the past with values that represent the future that we aspire to. Our focus should be on figuring on how to build AI that can represent and reason about *values*, rather than simply perpetuating past data.

Now this is exciting. Intranasal vaccines are likely to prevent infection and reduce transmission far more than our current vaccines, AND be more resistant to variants. Better vaccines are on the horizon for COVID-19. Why give up and accept endemicity when the cavalry is coming?
Vaccines that reduce infection & disease are needed to combat the pandemic. Here, @tianyangmao @BenIsraelow et al. describe our new mucosal booster strategy, Prime and Spike, to induce such immunity via nasal delivery of unadjuvanted spike vaccine 🧵 (1/) biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Chapter 8 on Trust in #rebootingAI lays out a compelling roadmap. Will we get there? Thanks @GaryMarcus for the cogent, challenging approach. @JohnsHopkinsIAA

Perhaps the first time I have ever fully agreed with @elonmusk.
Should be taught to all at a young age

Of those 3,500 Americans who died today, probably around 2,500 were unvaccinated––that is, died needlessly because they were persuaded they shouldn't get vaccinated. (Extrapolating from Washington state rates, where the unvaccinated, 19% vs 15% in the U.S., are 75% of deaths.)

I hadn’t heard “use it or lose it” applied to the human immune system before. Dr Krajden is a terrific microbiologist, but that statement is legit misinformation, and he should retract it.
Did the Director of the @CDCofBC, Dr. Mel Krajden, just say that our immune systems benefit from Covid infections? Did I hear that right?!

And regarding misconceptions- the primary misunderstanding (which is promoted by the tech industry) is that pattern matching is now, or will lead to, actual thinking. The shortcomings are detailed by @GaryMarcus here: arxiv.org/pdf/2002.06177.pdf

This is what happens when you confuse games with reality, statistics with knowledge, and benchmark datasets with the truth.

Beware graphs alleging current deep learning techniques will soon outperform humans “at most…work” It’s flawed to assume that 👉 increases in performance won’t saturate 👉 all tasks will follow same trends 👉 success on current AI benchmarks will translate into actual work
Future large training runs are clearly plausibly sufficient for current deep learning methods to outperform humans at most economically valuable work. "Fermi Estimate of Future Training Runs" danieldewey.net/risk/estimat…

A lot of machine learning research has detached itself from solving real problems, and created their own "benchmark-islands". How does this happen? And why are researchers not escaping this pattern? A thread 🧵

it is a spectacular testament to the inadequacy of the current regime that any of the below even needs be said.
We call on the @bcndp gov't to implement concrete measures with clear policies that recognize #COVID19 is an airborne virus. To reduce transmissions, protect our healthcare system, & minimize disruption to society gov't must implement the following. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #bced

This @CarlZimmer essay on origins of Omicron gave me chills Premise is that radical virus came into being only when a stunning accident of many rare mutations occurred simultaneously I have long thought that humans—no less dramatic—came about in same way nytimes.com/2022/01/24/scien…

Omicron’s infectious period is longer than 5 days, there are growing calls for return to the previous 10-day isolation policy. There was no scientific or medical reason to shorten the isolation period to 5 days, it was purely driven by economics & politics. apple.news/AWSz6Xov5QOKtltLc…

Great thread on the perils of "science by billionaires". Everytime I push back on Neuralink hype people tell me that it's harmless at worst and brings attention to the field. This thread does a better job than I had done in explaining my concerns.
Every time El*n M*sk or Neur*link trends in neural tech, I get a sinking feeling in my stomach. It's difficult to explain all the reasons behind the sheer depth of the despair I feel, but I must try.

The real "bitter lesson" is that representation matters, and our current ideas for learning representations are weak.
