I'm often asked how to start when it comes to creating icons and I think this quote from @sdw really nails it. When I was beginning to learn to incorporate 3D into icons, I started by trying to make an exact recreation of Apple's Grapher icon:

It's not *exact* (I had to use a different HRDI) but I learned something interesting! It appears Apple faked the perspective on this icon. The pencil is tilted away from the camera but rendered lying flat on the page, so I ended up finishing the shadows off in @sketch.

thinking about how back when I first tried drawing icons I thought designers hand painted every pixel on a raster photoshop canvas. thankfully, that is not the case.
