Dear Twitter Fam-Jam, I’m reading “Until We are Free: Reflections on Black Lives Matter in Canada.” If I started a Real Talk book club, would you sign up & join me? Conversations will be hard. But the community we build will be strong. Who’s with me?

@LauraMaeLindo could you please help our local Kitchener Center residents know about the missing Peregrine Fledgling. The species is at risk and if we can locate and rescue Jewel it would be wonderful. She may be in someone's yard or a business our team can't access.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day and I woke up feeling so much love. I have been blessed to have crossed paths with so many powerful Indigenous women along my journey. These are people who have guided my research and taught me to see deeper... #IndigenousPeoplesDay

... they taught me to understand that what lies all the way down at the roots of any social system reveals so much more than the flowers that bloom (or don’t bloom) during the season...

Over the years, these women have shared their knowledge with me - teachings that continue to reveal the interwoven parallels between the Indigenous and Black experiences of "being-other-in-the-world." And they have and continue to teach me about the overwhelming power of love ...

- not a passive love that settles with words. But a fierce love for our communities, for our people, and for our selves. Love that creates the drum beat of our hearts & awakens the mind. Love that thinks creatively about building & rebuilding. For that, I am eternally grateful.

If you are Indigenous reading this, please know that my heart wants you to be surrounded with love, care, compassion & REST. Please take this time to do what brings you joy and makes your heart sing. You have done enough, you are enough & you have brought enough to this party.

If you are a settler or, like myself, you have been settled upon this stolen land, I invite you to engage this National Indigenous Peoples Day in reflection on the wealth of knowledge Indigenous people have and continue to bring to our lives, to this world, and to our future...

I invite you to be ready to receive their teachings, to over-stand their wisdom as they present it to you no matter how difficult the ideas may be, and to use what you have been gifted to fight for true reconciliation today and every day.

On #WorldRefugeeDay, I am proud to represent a community that welcomes refugees from around the world. Today and every day, let’s open our hearts to those fleeing violence. Seeking asylum is a human right. Refugee rights are human rights.

For the first time, local Black residents learned that the Confederacy had lost the war and that they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. To overcome racial inequality, we must confront our history.

During one of those trips, Community Fridge organizer and local activist @realdealkami1 offered folks at the encampment the idea of a digital storytelling effort to speak to neighbours of the encampment, directly.

However, an eviction notice was served much earlier. Outreach workers and grassroots activists have been making trips to the camp with supplies and other comforts during this time. A brief respite in the lead up the June 30th eviction date.

Since the Victoria/Weber encampment propped up earlier this year, it has swelled up to over 60 residents with nowhere else to go. The expectation from the Region of Waterloo was that they vacate the area by the fall, essentially living on borrowed time in that area.
