Here is the Church of St Julian, where Julian of Norwich lived as an anchoress in the 14th century. The church was destroyed in the Blitz but rebuilt. Her recreated cell is very spare and moving.
Today I stood outside the gate of the English school where I spent ‘72/‘73 as an exchange student—50 yrs ago! I was given a special dispensation to stay up late to get updates on my father’s trial and to watch the Watergate hearings. Such, such were the joys. @TheLeys
Have you read this book? Tapes show Hoover told LBJ there was a problem with story about Oswald in Mexico: this was not Oswald. Who had motive to create a cover story before the assassination that Oswald—who had a thick trail of CIA connections—was really a Russian agent?
More Paris memories. In 1973 I read an article by Jim Forest about Thich Nhat Hahn. I decided to seek him out in Sceaux and knocked on the door. The next yr I returned and this time met Jim Forest there. We spent a day at Chartres, which changed my life. (1/2)
27 years later I edited “Thich Nhat Hahn: Essential Writings.” I went on to publish all of Jim Forest’s books, including, last year, his final work, “Eyes of Compassion: Learning from Thich Nhat Hahn.” Jim and Thay died this year, 10 days apart. @OrbisBooks#ParisMemories
Visiting Paris brings back so many memories. When I was 18 I impressed George Whitman, the legendary proprietor of Shakespeare and Co., by purchasing 10 vols of the complete works of Thomas de Quincey. (A strange kid). He invited me to stay in the store and I moved in.
