Feast of the Holy Family. Children ask about their origins. When did Mary and Joseph feel Jesus was ready to learn about his mysterious birth, the shepherds and wise men, the children of Bethlehem slaughtered in his place, their flight into Egypt?

Jesus didn’t speak of such things with his disciples. But he spoke of a new family, based not on bloodlines but on discipleship. “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, sister, mother.” So this original holy family anticipated a greater Holy Family to come.

“A sound was heard in Ramah, loud weeping and sobbing, Rachel weeping for her children because they are no more.” But thus spake the POTUS: “Any deaths of children are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies.” And thus was Rachel comforted.
Any deaths of children or others at the Border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally. They can’t. If we had a Wall, they wouldn’t even try! The two.....

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”— The Great Gatsby
.....Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are doing nothing for the United States but taking our money. Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it. We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries - taking advantage of U.S. for years!

An interesting list: Iran coup 1953; Guatemala coup 1954; secret bombing followed by invasion of Cambodia 1970; coup in Chile 1973. Point is not that US source of world’s ill, but our ignorance of history: habit of breaking things, walking away, then thinking we are the victims.

On the feast of St Thomas Beckett, it is interesting to note that among the issues in his conflict with Henry II was his insistence that clergy should be subject to ecclesiastical rather than civil courts for secular crimes.

The next bishop slain at the altar was 730 years later: Oscar Romero in El Salvador. Unlike Beckett, he did not die defending the prerogatives of the church, but the lives of the poor.

Unlike George Papadopoulos, who actually participated with distinction in the Model UN. Why wasn’t he chosen? Oh, right.

When Thomas Beckett, his former chancellor, now Archbishop of Canterbury, would not yield to King Henry II’s claims of total authority, he flew into a rage and said in the presence of his loyal barons: “What a set of idle cowards who allow me to be mocked by a low-born cleric.”

The knights, fully comprehending their lord’s meaning, departed for Canterbury and slew the Archbishop. All of Europe was horrified by this wanton deed. They understood that Beckett had died in defense of the principle that there is a higher authority than the king.
