Bd Antonio Rosmini (d 7/1/1855) in 1848 published “Five Wounds of the Church,” a sweeping critique of the church and the self-imposed afflictions that impeded its mission, including clericalism, the compromise with temporal power, and the enslavement of the church by riches
His work was placed on the Index of forbidden texts and he was subject to scurrilous attacks in anonymous pamphlets accusing him of heresy and immorality. He submitted humbly, satisfied that if he were not in error his message would be heard by future generations. Beatified 2007
