the Song of the Earth: “Without pulling it the tide comes in, without your twirling it the Earth can spin, Without your pushing them, the clouds roll by, If they can do without you, ducky, so can I I shall not feel alone without you I can stand on my own without you...

Happy Birthday to Sr Helen Prejean. She didn’t start out as a courageous champion in the struggle against the death penalty. She just tried to listen where Jesus was calling her, taking one step, then another.

If one day the US aligns with the vast majority of countries, and heeds the teaching of Pope Francis that state-sponsored executions are immoral, it may owe much to this Cajun Sister of St Joseph, and her compassion, courage, a sense of humor. Happy 80th @helenprejean 🎂❣️🎈💐

Pope Francis: “Easter is the feast of tombstones taken away, rocks rolled aside. God takes away even the hardest stones against which our hopes and expectations crash: death, sin, fear, worldliness. Human history does not end before a tombstone...

“Often what blocks hope is the stone of discouragement. Once we start thinking that everything is going badly and that things can’t get worse, we lose heart and come to believe that death is stronger than life....A kind of tomb psychology takes over...

“God asks us to view life as he views it, for in each of us he never ceases to see an irrepressible kernel of beauty. In sin, he sees sons and daughters to be restored; in death, brothers and sisters to be reborn; in desolation, hearts to be revived...

“Faith always needs to go back to Galilee, to reawaken its first love for Jesus and his call: to remember him, to turn back to him with all our mind and all our heart. To return to a lively love of the Lord is essential. Otherwise, ours is a “museum” faith, not an Easter faith.

“Let us put the Living One at the centre of our lives. Let us ask for the grace not to be carried by the current, the sea of our problems;the grace not to run aground...on the reefs of discouragement and fear. Let us seek him in all things...With him, we will rise again.” #Easter

His entire summary letter is a complete distortion of Mueller’s report, wherein M repeatedly documents the elements for obstruction and even preemptively refutes legal and constitutional defenses posed by POTUS’ counsel, as well as Barr’s argument about lack of underlying crime.

Furthermore, he refutes Barr’s fatuous argument that there can be no obstruction without an underlying crime, and preemptively offers devastating legal and constitutional rebuttal to claim that POTUS can’t be charged for exercising Article II powers.

In short, Barr’s summary, the basis for a month of headlines and tweets about “no obstruction,” could not be more dishonest or disreputable. (The claim of “no collusion”—distinct from criminal conspiracy—turns out to be just as phony.) All should read and judge for themselves.

Icon of Christ’s descent into Hades. Here his mission of redemption and solidarity extends even to Adam and Eve—as dead as anyone can be. Yet there is no place so dark that God’s mercy cannot reach, whether in the remote past or the infinite future.

None of this is visible on Holy Saturday, except with the eyes of faith and hope.

Yes, that goes back a ways: “If Jesus had been killed twenty years ago, Catholic school children would be wearing little electric chairs around their necks instead of crosses.”― Lenny Bruce

Holy Week has traditionally been marked by persecution of Jews. As we remember the passion and death of Christ, let us think of all those who are currently victims of projection and scapegoating by “Christians,” particularly Muslims, refugees, LGBTQ people.
