FD of St Columba, an Irish monk who died 6/9 597. His life was changed over a copyright dispute. After borrowing a precious Psalter from his former master St Finnian Columba made a copy. Learning of this Finnian claimed the copy belonged to him. King Diarmaid ruled in his favor.
“To every cow her calf,” said the king, “and to every book its son-book.” A subsequent war between Columba’s clan and Diarmuid’s followers cost over 3000 lives. In penance for his part, Columba vowed to win as many souls for Christ as had fallen in battle. He set off on a boat...
He eventually landed on the isle of Iona off the coast of Scotland. It became a vital font of Celtic spirituality and played a role in the evangelization of Scotland and northern England. Columba lived on for 30 years.
Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins d of typhoid June 8 1889. None of his poetry was published during his life. He was wracked with doubts about his abilities and accomplishments. Yet he is remembered as one of the greatest poets and religious artists in the English language.
