As the master gazed from his carriage at the squalid dwellings of the peasants he no longer felt troubled, as he had as a boy. His governess had explained: “Don’t you worry about them. They don’t mind it. They’re not like you.” #TolstoysTalesofTrump

St Telemachus attended gladiatorial “games” in the Roman Colosseum and was appalled by the gory spectacle. He jumped in the arena and separated the combatants. The enraged crowd stoned him to death. But this ended the bloody games in Rome.

Someone called out from a crowd, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!” To this Jesus responded, “Rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it” (Luke 11: 27–28).

Jesus was told that his “mother and brothers” were looking for him. Gazing at those seated around him he answered, “Who are my mother and my brothers? These are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me” (Mark 3: 33–35).

Thus Jesus rejected the claims of blood or natural kinship in favor of discipleship. In this perspective Mary’s preeminence is due to her having exemplified the spirit of true discipleship: attention, reverence, and obedience to the word and will of God.

It was in the space created by Mary’s faith—and not simply in her womb—that the Word became flesh. (Fritz Eichenberg wood engraving.)

Even as a young man the master began storing up supplies in his burial crypt. “One day I will be the richest man in heaven,” he said. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

Many tweets I have received in the past couple days confirm the importance of the book we just published @OrbisBooks (and to which I contributed). Edited by @jonmsweeney. orbisbooks.com/jesus-wasnt-k…

After seeing @AHiddenLifeFilm I remembered receiving a letter from Franziska Jägerstätter, acknowledging the @OrbisBooks edition of the letters she and Franz shared during his imprisonmemt. I had described how much her husband’s witness had helped me over many years.

After the death of her children she convinced her husband to join her in a life of prayer and good works. At once they freed their 8000 slaves, sold their estates, and gave all to the poor. After establishing monasteries she retired to a hermitage in Bethlehem.

I did not expect to change the minds of Catholic Antisemites. But I didn’t expect so many of them to see my tweet.
This post invited much comment and fraternal correction by zealous Defenders of the Faith—not one of whom reflected on the painting (save one who called the “so-called artist” a blasphemer) or the fact it was posted on the day of another synagogue attack. Just saying.
A timely reminder from Marc Chagall: Jesus was not a Christian.

The master prided himself as a gifted deal-maker. Yet his family worried about his penchant for opportunities that were literally “too-good-to-be-true” —such as the exchange he made for magic” beans or for a lantern supposedly endowed with special powers. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

Based on their behavior, James Cone proclaimed that White Christians who turned a blind eye to slavery and white supremacy were heretics and almost certainly not followers of Jesus. All Christians should/must read him. Hope that helps.
James Cone was a heretic & almost certainly not a Christian based on his teachings. But, to understand him you should/must read him. Then you provide a fair, honest & balanced critique. That is a basic requirement for a good education. Hope that helps. We do not legitimize him.
