On July 19 1692 Rebecca Nurse and four other women accused of witchcraft were hanged in Salem. The storm of accusations had raged all year--first alighting on persons of suspect character, but eventually on beloved figures like Nurse, excommunicated and "abandoned to the devil."
Eventually the storm passed and then, in private shame, people faced the horror of what they had done. Special discredit fell to the clergy who had so proudly arrayed themselves as God's agents in a cosmic battle, denouncing the "blasphemy" when victims recited the Lord's prayer.
