On Aug 1 1943, 11 Polish nuns in Nowogrodek were seized by the Gestapo and shot before an open grave. They had prayed that their lives would be taken in the place of 120 factory workers who were arrested. Their prayer was answered. These martyrs were beatified in 2000.

St Leopold Mandic, a Croatian Capuchin priest, was only 4-1/2 feet tall, with a stutter that kept him from the pulpit. He prayed for mission work but was assigned to hear confessions—10-15 hours a day. He prayed as if in each conversion the soul of a whole people was at stake.
He was called Brother-Absolve-All by those who judged him too quick to forgive. He said he only followed the example of the Lord. As for the charge that he only gave small penances he said ‘I do the rest myself.” D. July 30 1942.
