Outstanding video of Ben Salmon, courageous WWI conscientious objector--a saint for our time. The Life and Message of Ben Salmon piped.video/uemsuEoB_Ow via @YouTube
“There are people in the world who are so sick or so angry that they sometimes hurt other people and they’re usually the ones who end up in the news...but when we get sad and angry, you and I, we know what to do with our feelings so we don’t have to hurt other people.”
FD of St Victricius (407) bishop of Rouen. He started life as a soldier. On converting to Christianity he determined that military service was incompatible with the gospel. After laying down his arms he was arrested, flogged, and narrowly escaped execution.
“I inspired the wise with love of peace, I taught it to the teachable, I explained it to the ignorant, I imposed it on the obstinate, insisting on it in season and out of season.”—St Victricius
Here’s what we have to say to all of America’s men and women falling in the grips of hatred and white supremacy:
Come back. It’s not too late.
You have neighbors and loved ones waiting, holding space for you.
And we will love you back. ⬇️
“Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence... the language that drinks blood, laps vulnerabilities, tucks its fascist boots under crinolines of respectability and patriotism as it moves relentlessly toward the bottom line and the bottomed-out mind.”
Feast of the Transfiguration / Hiroshima Day.
“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”—Deut 30:19
74 years ago on Aug 6 1945 we dropped a 13k atomic bomb (tiny by the standard of modern thermonuclear weapons) on the city of Hiroshima. We have had 74 years to devise a way of doing without such “weapons.” But humans, it seems, can learn to live with anything.
Trump: Today, I'm also directing the [DOJ] to propose legislation ensuring that those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty. And that this capital punishment be delivered quickly, decisively and without years of needless delay politi.co/2KqoDmD
FD of Mary MacKillop (d 1909), first saint of Australia. While her Sisters provided heroic service to the poor, her story is remarkable for the opposition and persecution she endured from the bishops. One excommunicated her. Another spread rumors she was an alcoholic.
Another told Rome she was "infected with fanaticism and insubordination to authority," that her aim was "to subvert he whole system here." The bishops tried to overturn her constitution. Finally, Rome, In this case, came to the rescue and supported her.
She welcomed such ordeals as "presents from God"--an opportunity to grow closer to Christ. Her persecutors were "her most powerful benefactors." Nevertheless, she acknowledged, "God's presents were often hard to understand."
Everything in the Constitution involved competing motives. But not correct to call it “completely unhistorical” to say that slavery was a motive for Southern states to defend armed militias.
1 Background legislation has already passed in House, awaits action by Sen Maj Leader. 2 Marrying gun reform with “immigration reform” does not honor the victims but assures that the El Paso killer “did not die in vain.” 3 Can’t resist appropriating this event to campaign slogan.
