Photo: The iconoclasts literally stole the statues under the gaze of Sr Dorothy Stang and other martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of the Amazon, its people, and its creatures.

Not really. You evidently missed the ironic allusion to recent events in Rome.
In prison pending execution in 524 St Boethius, an avid student of philosophy, composed a treatise in which he imagined his dialogue with Philosophia. She describes life as a turning Wheel of Fortune—sometimes up, then down. Deliverance lies in drawing close to the still center.

Boethius’ “Consolation of Philosophy,” one of the most popular books in the Middle Ages, later inspired a popular game show. In this version however the goal is merely to guess the missing letters in a word or phrase, such as: THE E*PER*R HAS N* CL*THES.

Probably most GOP members are too young to have witnessed a lynching before but surely they remember what it means. If not, see below👇Meanwhile, watch this space for future false-victim references to the Gestapo, Genocide, Anne Frank, Louis XVI, Napoleon, etc.
So some day, if a Democrat becomes President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights. All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here - a lynching. But we will WIN!

Some years ago, Taliban lads, wishing to cleanse Afghanistan of idols, destroyed the 6th-century Bamiyan Buddhas and threw the pieces in the Tiber. EWTN covered it live.

Often the master spoke without words—simply communicating his thoughts or feelings with a simple thumb gesture. But his meaning was not always plain. It fell to his servant Igor to translate: “Good news! Master happy.” Or “Bad news. Today we all die.”—#TolstoysTalesofTrump

The first icon, indeed by Rublev, was discovered in Russia in 1918 mending a hole in the stairway of a barn.

Many of the earliest icons were destroyed in a zealous campaign that saw them condemned as idolatrous vestiges of paganism. Their defenders argued in vain that it was not the image they venerated but the spiritual reality it reflected. But there was a deeper issue at stake:

The very mystery of the Incarnation itself and whether Christ, a true man, could serve as a true image of the invisible God. The issue was finally judged in favor of icons in the 9th century. By that time not only countless icons were destroyed but the lives of their defenders.

The lads who felt they were purifying a church by seizing images of Our Lady of the Amazon and tossing them into the Tiber follow the path of other iconoclastic vandals—the Puritans who stripped churches of statues and stained glass windows; the French mobs who set out to cleanse

Afterward the boys probably felt pretty good. They had struck a blow against “idolatry.” They filmed their deed and were lavished with praise. But in destroying an image they did not destroy what it represented. The Amazon still burns, Our Lady still lives and prays for them.
