The master had a favorite tree, raised from a seedling. At Christmas he would decorate it with candles. But when it burned to the ground he blamed the peasants for not raking and said “This is why you can’t have nice things.” #TolstoysTalesofTrump

On Christmas at the White House kids could dress up as Herod’s soldiers searching for Baby Jesus so Herod too can worship him. Fun!

A new acquaintance urged us to visit Shri Shrivatsa Goswami in Vindravan. When I told him about myself, he said “This was no accident! You have come home.” It turns out he is a dear friend of my professors Diana Eck (author of chapter in my Gandhi book) and Harvey Cox.

I was not warned about the monkeys who are famous for stealing eyeglasses off your face. They have developed a symbiotic relationship with bystanders who receive a small fee for recovering them, and in turn reward the monkeys with mango juice

Another “hazardous air quality” day. Not ideal conditions for viewing the Taj Mahal

While Tolstoy thanks you he urges that you consider his earlier works (@OrbisBooks). He wrote moral tales about vain and corrupt landowners, petty aristocrats, and capricious masters who mistake servility and fear for real love long before turning to #TolstoysTalesofTrump

The master was enraged to learn the new postmaster was Ukrainian. “They are born thieves and pranksters,” he said. “Right now I’ll bet he is reading my missing letter from the Tsar and having a good laugh.” Then he whispered something to his son-in-law. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

In his autobiography Gandhi has a chapter called “The Magic Spell of a Book,” describing the impact of John Ruskin’s “Unto this Last,” which he read during a long train ride in S Africa. By the end he had resolved to amend his life in accordance with the principles in that book.

Possibly in all the world Ruskin’s book found no more appreciative reader thank Gandhi. But what author wouldn’t settle for one reader like that!

What an auspicious occasion! When they ask me at the airport whether anyone gave me something to take with me I will say, “Does this count?”
Yesterday was All Saints Day and I had dinner - after 20 years - with @RobertEllsberg, the author of All Saints.

The Gandhi Smriti is where Gandhi was shot while on his way to an evening prayer service. Footsteps mark his final path.

Today has been downgraded from “Hazardous Air Quality” to merely “Unhealthy.” Progress!
Wow. It wasn’t my imagination. Yesterday’s air quality in Delhi was the worst in the world.
Guess where do we have world's most #dangerous #air today. It's #Delhi at 810 AQI. And still it is not an #environmental emergency. This is real time AQI index of world.
