Raj ghat, the site of Gandhi’s cremation. It bears the inscription of his last words, “Hey Ram”—O God.

What an honor to receive a personal tour of the National Gandhi Museum with its director, Mr Annamalai. The library of works by and about Gandhi was itself extraordinary, including 150 vols of G’s personal newspaper clippings about the struggle in South Africa and India.

Aside from photographs, the museum includes a collection of spinning wheels, personal effects (including Gandhi’s sandals and walking stick), and even a reconstruction of his heart beat (from old ekg records) that you can listen to.

I left with wonderful gifts: a digital Gandhi library (20 books by G, 10 books about him, a documentary film, audio recordings, 100 photos, etc, all on a flash drive), plus my very own Gandhi pocket watch!

Long after he had been removed from office, his followers still believed that if only they touched the garment of his wax replica they would still receive their tax refunds.

The effort to unmask the whistleblower is not intended only to retaliate against him/her but to discourage future whistleblowers and to render statutory protections moot.

For All Saints day: “The Beatitudes are like a Christian’s identity card. So if anyone asks: “What must one do to be a good Christian?”, the answer is clear. We have to do, each in our own way, what Jesus told us in the Sermon on the Mount.”—Pope Francis, Gaudetr et Exsultate

FD of St Alphonsus Rodriguez (d 1617) who served 40 years as porter of the Jesuit College in Majorca. He entered the Jesuits as a lay brother following the death of his wife and children. He embraced his job as seriously as any mission assignment, as if each visitor were Christ.

No great events marked his life, but he left a great impression on all he met. He responded to tragedy by opening his heart to God—hence, he encountered God in all who passed through his open door. All the city attended his funeral.

At the Gandhi Peace Foundation I saw an old friend, Ravi Chopra, who reminded me of my first arrest, in 1975, in front of the Indian consulate for protesting on behalf of Indian democracy. That is how long I have waited to visit!

Spoke on Gandhi and. Christianity at the Jesuit Vidyajyoti College In Delhi. Their mission, which integrates spirituality, justice and service, inculturation, and interreligious dialogue, so reflects the spirit of Gandhi. They asked wonderful questions.

Afraid I don’t recall that.

Still available online: Gandhi Heritage Portal. I would presume the flash drive is available, but not sure. So incredible to put this in my pocket after once spending weeks reviewing the 100 vol version in the library.

Last night’s book launch in Ahmedabad was at Vidyapith Gujarat, a university founded by Gandhi in 1920. My publisher, Yagna Prakashan has a small office there. A gardener gave lovely directions: “It is on the left under a picture of Vinoba Bhave.”
