Pope Leo XIII d 7/20 1903. He followed the long reign of Pius IX who largely defined the church in negative opposition to the modern world. Leo launched the era of Catholic social teaching. "I want to see the church so far forward that my successor will not be able to turn back."
As was noted in one comment—Leo was followed by Pius X. Sometimes the journey of the church is like a game of Shoots and Ladders. At least the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching continued, though the next step forward had to wait 40 yrs after Leo’s Rerum Novarum.
“Those who are always hunting for the limitations and defects of others do not collaborate well with God, but, rather, those who know how to recognize the good that silently grows in the field of the Church and history, cultivating it until it becomes mature.” @Pontifex
There was a time when the master would settle a point of honor with a pistol or saber. But now, given the choice, he preferred the cognitive test. The first questions were deceptively simple but quickly advanced to identifying animals and counting back by 7. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Once again it was Infrastructure Week on the estate. The master had promised the peasants that one day they would have modern gaslighting, but first it was time to finish madame’s Tennis Pavilion! #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Bartolomé de las Casas, Dominican friar, prophetic defender of the Indians, died on July 18 1566: "I leave in the Indies Jesus Christ our God, scourged...and crucified not once but thousands of time." My reflections: americamagazine.org/issue/la…
“In the face of today’s injustice and violence, in the face of all the threats to human survival, do Christians stand on the side of the victims or with those who profit from their suffering?”
Thanks to Karen Pascal of @nouwensociety for this conversation about my book, "A Living Gospel" @OrbisBooks, which has now won 3 @CatholicPress Awards, a 1st Place from Assoc of Catholic Publishers, Gold Medal from Illumination Awards, Silver Medal from Nautilus Awards. 🍾
Me too—a standing room ticket at the Met in the 1970s. The Srs go to their deaths singing the Salve Regina, their numbers steadily decreased bythe guillotine’s WHACK. Yet when the last voice is stilled, you sense that their prayer will outlast the hatred of their executioners.
July 17 Feast of the Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne, inspiration for Poulenc’s Dialogues Des Carmelites (final scene / Salve Regina) piped.video/Cd9EFJaURmI via @YouTube. They went to the guillotine singing the Salve Regina. Witnesses said, as if going to their wedding.
To illustrate what would happen if nihilists or social democrats ruled the estate the master put on a puppet show that featured a wife hitting her husband with a rolling pin. “As long as I am master,” he said, “that carnage ends right here, right now.” #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Other things to bring back: good old rotary telephones. Remember those? “Dial M for Murder”? Black and White TV. Remember Perry Mason? Wagon Train? We won the West in black and white. Whale oil—clean, plentiful. Moby Dick! So many things—but not if the radical Dems have their way
