Trump claims he knows a man whose son has been dead seven years “and his son got a ballot.” He says they send ballots to everyone—“even someone’s dog.” My dog has been dead for seven years—but I know who he’s voting for!
Blessed Enrique Angelelli, bishop of La Rioja in Argentina was murdered on behalf of the military junta on 8/4/1976. While other bishops stood by or offered tacit blessings to the military coup, Angelelli denounced the terror and pledged to resist.
"The thought crosses my mind that the Lord needs a bishop in jail or killed in order to make us wake up to our episcopal collegiality and live it more deeply." --Bd Enrique Angelelli, d Aug 4, 1976
I am very grateful to @AODonnellAngela for this response to the impulse to “cancel” Flannery O’Connor—whose artistic vision helps unmask and resist the spiritual disease of racism (to which she herself was not immune).
Racism in her stories always functions as a sign of her characters’ distance from grace and self-knowledge. The same applies to her own prejudices. But she and her work need to be part of the conversation we are having today.
Not for the first time the master found himself explaining to his wife that beautiful women were automatically attracted to him, like a magnet—that at the sight of him they would ask his help shopping for furniture or other courtesies. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
When the master thought of the mocking verses circulated by nihilists he felt an unbearable sadness. But then his coachman would take him on a tour of the estate and with the sight of cheering peasants his sad mood would give way to a warm glow of enjoyment! #TolstoysTalesofTrump
My visits last week to Texas and Florida had massive numbers of cheering people gathered along the roads and highways, thousands and thousands, even bigger (by far) than the crowds of 2016. Saw no Biden supporters, and yet some in the Fake News said it was an equal number. Sad!
I was struck trying to remember how many of those who jumped in on this came to your defense when you were attacked by Rep Yoho in his passion for his God, his country, and his family.
St. Basil the Blessed (d. 1552), a Muscovite whose status as a "holy fool" earned him the privilege of speaking uncomfortable truths. He would wander naked through the streets of Moscow, praying and bearing witness.
Setting the stage for a new “Lost Cause.” The South’s mythology glamorized a noble defeat. Trump backers may do the same. washingtonpost.com/outlook/2…
The master believed strongly that the children are our future. That is why, to each of the brave little pioneers who volunteered to return to the mines, he presented a commemorative placemat bearing the official seal of the estate. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
