Jesuit Rutilio Grande was killed by a death squad along with an old catechist and teenage boy, now due for beatification. Grande, in 1977, was the first in a line of Salvadoran priests targeted for their option for the poor, his death a catalyst on Oscar Romero’s road to Calvary.
Great and happy news out of Rome! Blessed Rutilio Grande, pray for us! americamagazine.org/faith/20…

There follows the difficult question of how to affirm the deep goodness of the l’Arche idea, while acknowledging the dark shadow it its founder. So sad.

On Feb 22 1943 Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans, 21 and 22, were beheaded by the Nazis for their part in the White Rose, a small circle of young people in Munich who tried to provoke a moral awakening by distributing leaflets denouncing the evils of the Mazi regime.

Discerning with uncommon clarity the depth of Nazi depravity, they had decided to wage a spiritual war against the system, armed with no other weapons than courage and the idealism of youth, the power of truth, and an illegal duplicating machine.

By proclaiming the truth they hoped they might help break the Nazi spell and inspire others, who were experiencing doubts, to take up active resistance. They knew the day would come when their fellow Germans would face a moral reckoning and ask, “My God, what have we done?”

“Life is always on the edge of death; narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch does. I choose my own way to burn.” —Sophie Scholl #Resistance

For days after meeting the District Commissioner all the master could talk about was the new friend “who called me a genius!” Soon he was finding excuses to be in the neighborhood of the DC’s palace. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

That was fun! Talking about everyday holiness, the imperfections of the saints (including Dorothy Day), and the meaning of “blessed are those who mourn.” #LACongress

To the master the District Commissioner embodied the highest ideals of manhood: strength, humor, the ability to command loyalty and instill fear in subordinates. He used to study his maxims and recite them to his staff. For example: “Snitches get stitches.” #TolstoysTalesofTrump

Learning that a troupe of wandering minstrels was encamped outside the estate the master invited them to put on a show for all the orphans working his fields. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

Someone once told #DorothyDay to hold her temper. She replied, “I hold more temper in one minute than you will in your entire life.”

Sorry for your poor experience, but I simply write for @GiveUsThisDayLP and am unfortunately not in a position to help. You should direct your concerns to them (and certainly not to the Japanese American National Museum). Hope you continue to subscribe.
Mason, who survived the bombing of Tokyo, was indelibly marked by her experience. She moved to America and spent her life painting in all styles. But she left behind a remarkable collection of images inspired by the suffering she had witnessed and her passion for peace.
