Gospel for today: the Beatitudes, which Pope Francis has called the Christian’s identity card. Many of the blessings—to the poor in spirit, the merciful, the peacemakers—speak to the demands of our moment. But perhaps none so directly as “Blessed are those who mourn.”
Mourning in this case is not a matter of just being sad—it is matter of maintaining one’s sensitivity to the wounds of the world, of refusing to accommodate oneself to injustice and the “way things are.”
Jesus did not urge such mourners to put their sorrows behind them, to exchange their hearts of flesh for hearts of stone, or to make an easy peace with the miseries of the world. They shall be comforted, because their mourning points the way to a new way.

Pope Francis's approach seems increasingly wise. This fall we are publishing a book he compiled, "Letters of
Tribulation," that reflect his thoughts on how to cope with times of trial. @OrbisBooks
