For many of Trump’s base the jury’s still out on the Emancipation Proclamation.

Congrats to @theCTSA on yr 75th anniv. Tonight we had planned a reception to celebrate our @OrbisBooks 50th anniv. At my first convention in 1988 Orbis was at best a marginal presence, with a small table, and few CTSA members among our authors. What a difference 32 years make!

One could trace the evolution of CTSA in terms of influence of themes that Orbis helped bring to the table: global perspectives (African, Asian, Latin American), contextual theologies and other voices from the margins, particularly African American, Latinx, women’s voices....

...ecology; interreligious dialogue; inculturation; mission….So many of these themes have now entered into the bloodstream of the Society. Plus authors beyond the Society who have helped shape Catholic theology in the US:

Nine of the past 10 John Courtney Murray Award winners were Orbis authors: James Keenan, M. Shawn Copeland, Francis Clooney, Joseph Komanchak, Anne Patrick, Terrence Tilley, James Corridon, Peter Phan—not to mention the bulk of the Society leadership and most plenary speakers.

All these authors have contributed to the hope and promise that “another world” and “another church” are possible. Cheers to #CTSA75, with gratitude for a fruitful partnership. Here's to many years to come! ctsa-online.org/VirtualExhib…

Surely possible to find symbols of Italian American legacy who weren’t responsible for genocide.

Birthday of Anne Frank, June 12 1929. “I want to go on living after my death.”
#MastersofSocialIsolation #10. In a time when Jewish children in Europe were hunted like vermin, Anne Frank did not choose her isolation. With her own and another family she was confined for 2 years in a “secret annex” in Amsterdam, never going out, keeping still all day.

On June 12 1963 civil rights organizer Medgar Evers was shot in his driveway in Miss. and died in front of his wife and children. Evers was among those black army veterans who returned from the war in Europe and found it intolerable to return home to insults and oppression.

With the NAACP he organized boycotts and registered voters. As a result he faced daily death threats. “As long as God gives me strength to work and try to make things real for my children I’m going to work for it—even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice.”

The master recalled a beautiful scene he had witnessed in his youth when a group of mounted chevalier guards set upon a procession of peasants protesting something—lack of bread, perhaps—and “cut through them like butter”—even tho, yes, there was some blood. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
Trump is recounting the protest violence in Minneapolis. He says it was a "beautiful scene," even though it's not "supposed to" be, when the National Guard went in and, "like a knife cutting butter," stopped the violence, even though "yes there was some tear gas."

On numerous subjects—history, military arts, geography, medicine, wind, walls, biblical studies—the master knew more than anyone. Not that he had ever read a book on these subjects. But there were some kinds of knowledge that came with being the master. #TolstoysTalesofTrump
