"In the course of these last long weeks life has become suddenly much less rigid...Things are clearer and at the same time more profound. Above all God has become almost tangible. Things I have always known and believed now seem so concrete; I believe them but I also live them."

"One thing is clear. I must surrender myself completely. This is seed-time, not harvest. God sows the seed and some time or other he will do the reaping. The one thing I must do is make sure the seed falls in fertile ground. And I must arm myself against pain and depression....

St Brigid was born into slavery, yet became the abbess of a double monastery and a renowned spiritual teacher. Her only desire was “to satisfy the poor, to expel every hardship, to spare every miserable man.” Her miracles reflect her propensity to nourish and give succor.
Feast of St Brigid of Ireland : “She supplied beer out of one barrel to 18 churches, which sufficed from Maundy Thursday to the end of paschal time.” Another time she turned water to milk which, having drunk from it, did cure a leprous woman. And many other wonders.

Feast of St Marcella (410), a wealthy widow of Rome who gave away her fortune, “preferring to store her money in the stomachs of the needy rather than hide it in a purse.” She founded one of the first communities of Christian women. St Jerome served as their spiritual advisor.

During the sack of Rome she was beaten by invaders. Eventually they were shamed to withdraw, but at 85 she found it hard to recover from this trauma and she died soon after, smiling, “conscious of having lived a good life and hoping for a reward hereafter.”

“Our Sisters had always helped the poor but this experience of being with the poor as their consciousness was rising and as they struggled to become liberated from centuries of oppression was very different. It was an awakening for me to a new understanding of being a Christian.”
