When students began to “go to the people,” teaching that all were equal, that there should be no more masters or estates, the master requested reports of any sightings of this sickness so it could be quickly extinguished. #TolstoysTalesofTrump

Not exactly. I think Péguy’s point was that *mystique*—the animating spirit of life and dimension of the heroic—often devolved into mere *politique* where winning and holding power were everything. What was needed was a political morality that retained its sense of spirituality.

Has anyone considered the possibility that it could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds?

French poet, Catholic, socialist, Charles Peguy died at the battle of the Marne on Sept 5, 1914. "There have been saints of all sorts, but today perhaps there is need for a new kind of saint."
“The one who lets things happen is just like the one who makes things happen. And the one who allows things to go on is like the one who orders them done.”—Charles Peguy

How remarkable to hear a pope talk about his own capacity for conversion. Pope Francis speaks of his "ecological conversion" prior to “Laudato Si’.” americamagazine.org/politics… via @americamag

Every day he should post a video of himself successfully executing a one-handed drink of water. He should hold up the day’s newspaper to prove this wasn’t faked. And close with: “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV” to show he is as sharp as the day he was accepted at Wharton.

Still reliving the moment when he astonished the Drs with his perfect rendition of “Person Woman Man Camera TV.” “By George, I think he’s got it!” they exclaimed. Someone produced a guitar and they all began to dance and shout. “And where is that woman and man?” “On TV! On TV!”

How does a country cope with shame? In July 1942 French police in occupied Paris carried out Operation Spring Breeze—arresting 13K Jews, including 4K children, who were detained in the Vélodrome d'Hiver (a cycling stadium), pending deportation to Auschwitz. Only a few survived.

After the war, many in France denied any culpability, claiming it was a Nazi operation. But in 1995 Pres. Chirac reversed this position, acknowledging the work of 450 French policemen, and issued a public apology: "These black hours will stain our history forever...

"France, home of the Enlightenment and the Declaration of the Rights of Man, land of welcome and asylum, France committed that day the irreparable. Breaking its word, it delivered those it protected to their executioners." In 2017 President Macron renewed this apology:

"It was indeed France that organized this roundup. Not a single German took part. It is convenient to see the Vichy regime as born of nothingness, returned to nothingness. Yes, it's convenient, but it is false. We cannot build pride upon a lie." Someday many many look back on
