Feast of St Angela Medici, founder of the Ursulines (d 1540). Conceiving of a movement of women, engaging in apostolic work among the poor and educating young girls, she devised a third way apart from the options of marriage or enclosed religious life.
The annals of women saints are marked by countless examples of those who cleared a new path, apart from the choices dictated by church or society. Later honored—but often in their lives scorned or chastened by men who claimed their sacred desires conflicted with the will of God.
Feast of St Paula: fluent in Latin and Greek, and a student of Hebrew, she provided invaluable assistance to St Jerome in his translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible from the original languages.
Today’s gospel: Jesus asks “Who are my mother and my brothers?”Do we Christians cling to Jesus, trying to keep him to ourselves, jealous of his love for the crowd? Instead of claiming family privilege on the basis of blood we define the family of Jesus on the basis of doctrine.
But do we believe that God’s family consists only of Christians? Heed his words: “Whoever does the will of God is my brother, my sister, my mother.” (Mk 3:35)
