50 years ago on June 28 1971 my father surrendered for arraignment in Boston for copying the Pentagon Papers. A reporter asked him how he felt about facing jail. He said: “Wouldn’t you go to jail if it would help end this war?” Here with my stepmother Patricia. @DanielEllsberg

I retweeted this clip today without having heard the news of Mike Gravel’s death at 91. A brave man.
I love this clip of Mike Gravel recounting reading the Pentagon Papers into the Senate record, because of what it teaches about courage. He was not excited, not confident; he was “frightened to death”, scared of going to prison; he was overcome with emotion. And *that* is bravery

Italian priest Lorenzo Milano was tried for insulting the Fatherland by defending conscientious objectors. The world is divided between oppressed and oppressors, he said. “The former are my Fatherland.” He died if leukemia on 6/261967 while his acquittal was under appeal.

By the transitive principle, all those bishops and priests who have scorned and defamed @JamesMartinSJ are not “priests for all men and women” and are not imitating the style of God.

The day Jesus came to my parish. “I needed to believe that my own faith was not dead, merely sleeping.” (My homily for today’s Gospel.) @ClearFaithPub

Hugely influential in Italy, but I don’t think much about him in English, except about his pedagogical theories. I learned about him from coverage in the Catholic Worker.
