From last night.
"We are at this moment on a road to Hell." @DanielEllsberg exposed the government's lies about the Vietnam War by leaking the Pentagon Papers. Five decades later, he's worried about where we're headed as a country, and as a human race.

Today marks the 650th anniv of the revelations of Julian of Norwich, the 14th-century English mystic and hermit, whose writings were only widely discovered in the 20th century. Merton called her with Newman the most significant English theologian. Reflections from the pandemic 👇
#MastersofSocialIsolation (4) Julian of Norwich, a 14th-cen English mystic, spent half her life as an anchoress, enclosed in a cell attached to her local church. From a small window she could receive food and offer spiritual advice, while from another she could view the altar.

Ryan, that Sheehan story was nonsense. While true that he copied the papers without my dad's consent, Sheehan himself confirmed in the story that when he finally asked my Dad to give him the papers (tho saying falsely that the Times didn't plan to use them) he did.

Artist Ade Bethune owed her name to a misprint at the Catholic Worker. Her name, A. de Bethune, was accidentally rendered Ade. She decided to keep it. My reflections jn @GiveUsThisDayLP

Many yrs ago my dad appeared on stage with Gordon Liddy. He asked the audience if they were familiar with Vonnegut’s concept of a karass—a group of people collaborating unknowingly in a common plan. He said: “Gordon Liddy and I were part of a karass to end the VN war.”

Without Liddy’s burglary of his psychiatrist’s office (approved by the White House) there would have been no need for payoffs to the Watergate burglars, no Nixon resignation, no end of the war. Karass: “a team that do God’s Will without ever discovering what they are doing.”

Entertaining but misleading about the motive for the burglary. NIxon admin was not trying to find evidence that he was a spy or to smear him, but to prevent him from leaking what they feared he possessed, additional docs on Nixon’s secret plans for escalation, including nukes.
