Feb 15, 1932: death of Ben Salmon, a Catholic CO from Denver who refused to serve in army during WWI. There being no provision for Catholic conscientious objectors, he was sentenced to death, reduced to 24 years. He fasted and was force-fed in prison until his release in 1920.

He was right. Historians today pretty much agree that WWI was precipitated by a clash of powerful egos and resulted in the unnecessary death of millions. A colossal tragedy.
