Some priests were offended. They were taught that Holy Thursday commemorated the establishment of the priesthood. Only the feet of men were to be washed. But here was Francis washing the feet of women, Muslims, prisoners! What is commemorated is a model of priesthhood: service.

“I have given you a model to follow, so that I what I have done for you, you should also do.” (John 13:15). A model that extends to the priesthood of all believers.
