July 28 1981 Bd Stanley Rother, an Oklahoma priest serving in Guatemala, was killed by a death squad in the rectory of his parish in San Attilan. Not a priest in the “prophetic” mold—just a simple shepherd who would not abandon his flock and ultimately laid down his life.
