St Leopold Mandic, a Croatian Capuchin priest, was only 4-1/2 feet tall, with a stutter that kept him from the pulpit. He prayed for mission work but was assigned to hear confessions—10-15 hours a day. He prayed as if in each conversion the soul of a whole people was at stake.

He was called Brother-Absolve-All by those who judged him too quick to forgive. He said he only followed the example of the Lord. As for the charge that he only gave small penances he said ‘I do the rest myself.” D. July 30 1942.

When the body of Padre Pio was brought to St Peter’s Basilica in the Year of Mercy, PF also wanted this man’s body also brought to Rome. He spoke well of Pio but when he talked about this man, I sensed a much deeper affection and admiration in Francis for Mandic
