On Aug 1 1943, 11 Polish nuns in Nowogrodek were seized by the Gestapo and shot before an open grave. They had prayed that their lives would be taken in the place of 120 factory workers who were arrested. Their prayer was answered. These martyrs were beatified in 2000.
