74 years ago on Aug 6 1945 we dropped a 13k atomic bomb (tiny by the standard of modern thermonuclear weapons) on the city of Hiroshima. We have had 74 years to devise a way of doing without such “weapons.” But humans, it seems, can learn to live with anything.

If we look deeper, we may notice the part of us (not all of us) that craves mayhem and gore. If we didn't, we would've already solved this issue and others, like mass shootings which appear to serve the function of ritual bloodletting of the past (see also executions, lynchings).
