She committed herself to live “the gospel without compromise”—first in a house of hospitality in Toronto, then in Friendship House in Harlem, dedicated to interracial justice, where Thomas Merton served for a time, and where she befriended Dorothy Day.

Known for her earthy humor and righteous anger. When a society woman sniffed contemptuously, “You smell of the Negro,” Catherine retorted, “And you stink of hell!” Later she moved to Canada and formed Madonna House, a center of prayer.
