Servant of God Catherine de Hueck Doherty d Aug 14 1985. A former Russian baronness, divorced, she gave up a successful career lecturing about her escape from Communism when she realized that just such a materialistic life and failure of Christian values had fed the Rev.

She committed herself to live “the gospel without compromise”—first in a house of hospitality in Toronto, then in Friendship House in Harlem, dedicated to interracial justice, where Thomas Merton served for a time, and where she befriended Dorothy Day.

Known for her earthy humor and righteous anger. When a society woman sniffed contemptuously, “You smell of the Negro,” Catherine retorted, “And you stink of hell!” Later she moved to Canada and formed Madonna House, a center of prayer.
