In his autobiography Gandhi has a chapter called “The Magic Spell of a Book,” describing the impact of John Ruskin’s “Unto this Last,” which he read during a long train ride in S Africa. By the end he had resolved to amend his life in accordance with the principles in that book.

Possibly in all the world Ruskin’s book found no more appreciative reader thank Gandhi. But what author wouldn’t settle for one reader like that!
