In 1945, in midst of the bombing of Tokyo and Japanese cities, Sec of War Stimson persuaded Truman to remove Kyoto--seat of Japanese culture--from the targets for the A-bomb. He had read about Kyoto in a magazine and felt that would be going "too far." Nagasaki took its place.
....targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!

In 1944, as German army faced Allied advances, Hitler ordered that Paris should only be abandoned as a "field of ruins." Explosive charges were installed in all the city's great monuments, but the commanding officer refused to carry out the order.
