persuaded him to become a monk. As he grew in knowledge of the faith, so did he grow in his poetic gifts. Historian St Bede gives great attention to this cowherd/monk/poet, who in translating sacred history in his native tongue was on a par with any missionary bishop.

In Caedmon the English tongue was truly baptized. In returning praise to their Creator, a new people in a new language found the true reason for which they were created.
