She was called worse in her lifetime. J Edgar Hoover called her a “very erratic and irresponsible person” whose activities “suggest she is consciously or unconsciously being used by communist groups.” Worse: “she maintains a hostile and belligerent attitude towards the Bureau.”

Best part: “She makes every effort to castigate the Bureau whenever she feels so inclined.” When I read this to her from her FBI file she said. “He makes me sound like a mean old woman...read it again.”

What pushed Hoover over the edge was that she wrote a column making fun of an FBI agent who visited her house. He displayed his gun and said, “I believe in defending myself.” She wrote: “How brave a man defending himself against us women and children hereabouts.”
