Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to design a church in Barcelona, which became the Basilica of the Holy Family. He worked on this project with single-minded devotion for 43 years, until he was struck by a streetcar and died on June 10 1926.

The Basilica was not just an expression of his artistic vision, but of his religious faith. In his last months he slept on a cot in the church. He has been proposed as a candidate for canonization. Work on the Basilica continues. "Beauty is the image of truth."

Replying to @RobertEllsberg
I would love to see the Basilica. But, honestly, I am mystified by people whose response to the Gospel is the construction of extraordinarily elaborate churches.

Ugliest church I’ve ever seen. Gaudi’s name gave birth to the word “gaudy.”

I came out of the subway, turned a corner & just stood there in front of the passion facade for 15 minutes with tears running down my far from Catholic cheeks. The forested interior, just amazing. & love the school house for the children of construction workers.
