Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to design a church in Barcelona, which became the Basilica of the Holy Family. He worked on this project with single-minded devotion for 43 years, until he was struck by a streetcar and died on June 10 1926.

The Basilica was not just an expression of his artistic vision, but of his religious faith. In his last months he slept on a cot in the church. He has been proposed as a candidate for canonization. Work on the Basilica continues. "Beauty is the image of truth."

Replying to @RobertEllsberg
His designs are breathtaking. A curiously timely fact from his life (per Wiki): he was beaten a few times by police, and also arrested, during peaceful demonstrations.
