Good article. I’ve always been fascinated by JHG too. I wish he had lived to write the Merton bio. The 2 men were obviously drawn to each other as if they shared some inner vision.

Interesting question—too deep for a tweet. But I think context matters; wasn’t undertaken as performance for the entertainment or amusement of white people but in order to expose racism. That said, it was an “experiment” of its time (1959)— not something that would work today.
