Bishop James E. Walsh, d. 7/29 1981, was among the first group of #Maryknoll missioners sent to China in 1918. Having stayed on after the Revolution he was arrested in 1958, charged as a spy and sentenced to 20 yrs in prison. In 1970 he was allowed to walk free into Hong Kong.

As for the "enforced inactivity" of arrest: "suffering patiently borne is activity, so is prayer, or any kind of mental work--things which can be done in prison as well as anywhere. A priest does as much for his flock by suffering for them--and maybe he does even more."
