What we are seeing is a collision between two types of moral/ethical thinking: the individual versus the systemic. When we focus on the systemic, we lose sight of the individual, and vice versa. What we need to do is pay attention to both, somehow.

All of those statues DO represent white supremacy or hegemony, taken as a whole—but each one also has an individual story that is much more complicated. Both are true.

The Church has typically focused more on individual morality (sin and confession), and sometimes Catholics have trouble seeing larger "structures of sin." Though since Vatican II a lot has changed in that regard.
