On Aug 14 1941 St Maximilian Kolbe died in a starvation bunker in Auschwitz where he had been consigned for weeks with 9 others as punishment for another prisoner’s escape. Kolbe, a Franciscan priest, had volunteered to take the place of another prisoner with a wife and children.

Serious question: I’ve never understood this. Suicide is considered mortal sin in the Catholic Church. Granted, M.Kolbe was saving the life of another, but he did so knowing he was choosing his own death (which is different from pushing someone out of danger, and that person dies

Interesting question. I disagree with the premise that he was choosing his own death. He was choosing to save a life. If that meant he could or even most assuredly would die, dying was not his explicit goal. Rather, it was extending life to an Other.

Saint Maximilian has helped me to a deeper understanding of Jesus' death for all of humanity. Here's a man who gave his live through love & care for a man & his family so they could be free. Pretty well sums up Christ's love for us even to death on the cross doesn't it?

Friends of mine named each child after a saint, all except Colby, it seemed. (Duh...) I had only heard the name, not seen it written. Eventually I asked why. Bam! “Kolbe.” How awesome is that! I know Kolbe will spend life trying to help people, as his namesake gloriously did.
