Sadako Sasaki, who died on 10/25/55, was 2 when she survived the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. 9 yrs later she was found to have leukemia. Learning of the legend that whoever folds 1000 paper cranes will be granted a wish she devoted her remaining life to this prayer for peace.

My father, a nuclear veteran, died in 1968 of acute leukemia,16 years after being exposed to ionizing radiation. May the sacrifice of him, countless others, continue to be inspired in heaven by the life of Sadako Sasaki. Let us pray for peace always, in the image of paper cranes.

I read the book Thousand Paper Cranes to my 2nd grade students every year, and we would make white paper cranes in her memory. Such a beautiful story!
