John LaFarge Jr., SJ d Nov 24 1963. A longtime editor at @americamag he was for many decades one of the leading Catholic champions of "interracial justice." In 1938 Pope Pius XI asked him to draft an encyclical on the subject: "Say what you would say if you were pope."

The encyclical *Humani generis unitas* ('On The Unity of the Human Race') was a strong condemnation of racism and anti-semitism. It was presented to Pius XI, but never released, owing to the pope's death in Feb 1939. His successor, Pius XII, shelved the document.

Interesting...years ago I lived for a summer at the Jesuit residence LaFarge House in Cambridge MA without knowing who LaFarge was.
