A priest once used a coffee mug in the place of the chalice for Mass at a homeless shelter. After Mass, Dorothy Day kissed the mug & buried it outside. The mug was no longer suited for coffee b/c it held the Blood of Christ. She didn’t want anyone to mistake it for a mug again.

Great message- I’ve heard /retold this story a number of times and also have heard it may not be fully accurate. @RobertEllsberg (forgive me if I asked you already) what do you say?

I believe the legend comes from a column of 3/1966 where she reports being disturbed *to hear* that a priest had used a coffee cup, but concludes: "And yet—perhaps it happened to remind us that the power of God did not rest on all these appurtenances with which we surround it."
