St Seraphim of Sarov (d 1833), a Russian monk, became a hermit in the woods, served as a spiritual teacher to inquiring lay people, whom he addressed as “My joys.” His purified humanity was charged with supernatural charity. Animals, including bears, felt no fear in his presence.
