On Feb 22 1943 Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans, 21 and 22, were beheaded by the Nazis for their part in the White Rose, a small circle of young people in Munich who tried to provoke a moral awakening by distributing leaflets denouncing the evils of the Nazi regime.

There's a wonderful moment in the film when Sophie is being questioned, she is at first evasive about who distributed the leaflets, but then she nerves herself to speak truth to power, and asked, "who did it?" answers, Ich. Und ich bin stolz darauf. "Me. And I'm proud of it."

When she was caught red handed she at first tried to take full responsibility and save the others.
